Madeira's Marine Nature Reserve is Garajau located at the south eastern shores of Funchal, actually the picturesque village and resort Garajau. The reserve has been founded in 1986, and with the laws that forbid fishing and hunting, its marine world has increased significantly. It was named after the bird Garajau (a kind of tern) that frequently nests and breeds here. You can visit its spectacular cliffs displaying a statue of Christ or the nearby areas Canico and Villa Echium.
Located on the south shore of Madeira it is blessed with mild sunny year-around weather, perfect conditions for water activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Its biological richness is enormous and diverse. There are quite a few wrecks and stunning drop-offs creating an area of great importance to scientist, biologist and tourists. Dusky Groupers, Monk seals (sea wolf), manta rays, trumpet fish and eels are some of the inhabitants of this seven kilometer wide nature reserve.
